The Tognum subsidiary MTU South Africa (PTY) Ltd, supplier of engines, complete propulsion and power systems in southern Africa recently announced its new intake for the next four year apprenticeship course.

A structured programme for training future artisans has now been in place at MTU South Africa for three years and, as the training year begins in January, it will be just a few months before the next generation consisting of five new trainees gets to grips with the intricacies of engine assembly and servicing.

“Our system closely resembles the German model and uses both workshop training and vocational college courses to prepare our young people for their jobs as artisans. We look forward to accepting five more apprentices this year and every year thereafter until a total of 20 trainees in the programme is reached”, explained Michael Baumann, Managing Director MTU South Africa.

The apprentices will receive the best training and coaching by qualified technicians from MTU SA. The training entails practical learning conducted in the company’s workshops based in Cape Town, Simon’s Town and Johannesburg as well as relevant theoretical training at Further Education and Training colleges (FET) and by accredited training providers in South Africa. MTU SA has appointed a dedicated “Apprentice Trainer” to train, guide, coach and monitor the development and progress of the trainees.

Each year the best apprentice will have the opportunity to go to MTU Friedrichshafen in Germany for a six week exchange programme. “With its solidly-founded technical training programs designed to prepare the workforce of the future, Tognum is not only creating a worldwide basis for future success, it is also offering young people the chance to achieve 3 top-class vocational qualifications and secure excellent career prospects”, said Matthias Jobmann, head of Human Resources at Tognum.

The artisans will service the diesel engine repair and maintenance fields for the company in Sub Saharan Africa. MTU SA holds an accreditation as a training establishment from the manufacturing, engineering and related services SETA (merSETA), a training authority of South Africa.
