Apprenticeship

Q: I’ve always been good at fixing things with my hands, and I think I’d like to be an artisan. How do I find out which direction I should go in?

You can attend an assessment that identifies your natural aptitude, for example, whether you would be better suited for a mechanical or electrical apprenticeship.

These assessments are run by the FET Colleges that co-ordinate the theoretical components of apprenticeships. Not all industries conduct apprenticeship programs, and not all publicise their available programs widely.

However, you may find information on SA apprenticeships in manufacturing, mining and construction, printing and packaging, the chemical industries and healthcare.

Once you have determined your aptitude, you’ll need to conduct research online and in libraries in order to find apprenticeship contracts.
