The Career Planning workshop is an introductory workshop which will help you discover what you want to do with your career, how to research alternatives, how to change career and how to job hunt effectively without relying on traditional job search methods.
Who should attend?
All those who desire intensive involvement in their own career planning, who want to find their dream job, or who may be at a crossroads in their career.
This programme is helpful for prospective students who may wish to clarify what they want from their careers, graduates who want to make career changes, or anyone who is at a crossroads in their career and wants to find a career they like or needs a more effective job search strategy.
Do you know what you want to do?
Many people formulate far too vaguely what they really want to do. They therefore look for a fitting job in the newspaper, or hope that an agency will find something appropriate for them. Since there are a limited variety of jobs in the newspapers, it can take some time before a suitable job comes along. Job-seekers may therefore start to make compromises that don't feel very good, and so fail to find satisfaction in their work.
Are there other ways to enter the job market?
YES, there are. But it means working out what you are looking for, and then learning how to job hunt more proactively.
The process requires you to:
• Identify your personal skills and interest and how these can be applied to the world of work
• Do empirical research on possible career options. This is a process of both identifying and speaking to others who are engaged in a field that interests you to get a better sense of how that career might work for you.
• Applying practical and systemic process of making an entry into the job market you have chosen. Since the bulk of jobs do not appear in the media, it is important to approach organisations in your chosen field and clearly present what you would like to do (specifically) to those who have the power to hire you.
