Prestige Academy prepares young men in grades 5-8 for admission to and success in demanding college preparatory high schools. Prestige Academy was created to offer a tuition-free, public middle school alternative to students in Wilmington and surrounding Delaware communities. In order to address the severe academic underperformance and low college matriculation rates of boys from these communities, the school offers a highly rigorous, college-preparatory curriculum supported by a structured school culture. The Academy served approximately 108 fifth graders in its first year, and planned to grow one grade per year until it reached grade eight. By 2010, they expect to serve over 400 boys in fifth through to eighth grade. Among its strengths, Prestige Academy counts its highly strucutured, disciplined and respectful culture that is focused on character development. It has a small school size that focuses on literacy and math instruction, with an extended day and year, with comprehensive year-end exams in all core subjects.
