Don’t wait for stress to find you

Dealing with stress effectively is an important life skill. When assignments come rolling in and exams begin do you know how to maintain a balanced lifestyle, or do your stress levels prevent you from thriving academically? Here are some ways to prevent and manage stress.

It’s important to realize that stress is a normal part of life and can be described as the “physical, emotional and psychological response to circumstances”. Stress cannot be avoided but the way we handle it will determine its effect on our performance and success in life.

There are two types of stress. Knowing the difference is the start to a more balanced life. Stress that is characterised by a minor dose of anxiety or ‘creative tension’ which motivates us to get things done is defined as healthy stress. Unhealthy stress or distress happens when we feel overwhelmed, threatened or have unreasonable expectations of ourselves.

The way we deal with stress depends on what we believe will ease or remove it. Some people turn to negative thoughts or talk about self. Drug and alcohol abuse are a form of releasing the tension, but only temporarily. Over time this kind of behaviour will only increase anxiety and further complicate the situation.

The effects of stress can manifest physically resulting in various health issues such as high blood pressure, headaches, mood swings and irritability.

A balanced life is the best antidote to stress. This means following a healthy diet, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep.

Ideally the aim is to prevent unhealthy stress from ever developing but to do this you need to eliminate the behaviours that spark stress. For example poor time management and ‘cramming’ before exams is likely to heighten anxiety levels during high pressured periods.

The way we perceive situations will determine the way we respond. If an issue is causing unhealthy levels of stress, step back and assess the situation logically and calmly. Remember that you are not alone. Share your concerns with a friend or seek guidance from a counsellor.
