The University of Zululand (also known as UniZulu) is just south of Empangeni, north of the Thukela River, in KwaZulu-Natal.

In keeping with the government’s vocational approach to higher education, UniZulu offers a mix of university courses and career-focused programmes that cater simultaneously for the needs of industrial stakeholders and the rural community. In this way, the university combines the needs of ‘entrepreneurial’ and ‘alternative’ education.

With four faculties (Arts, Commerce-Administration-Law, Education and Science-Agriculture, as well as facilities in aid of learning (the Academic Literacy Unit, a Personal Computer Support Facility and others), UniZulu pursues its quest for excellence, with emphasis on community service.

University of Witwatersrand

The University of Witwatersrand (Wits) is in the northern areas of central Johannesburg, in the suburbs of Braamfontein and Parktown.

It has five academic campuses and five faculties, with 25 430 students registered in 2007. With more than 100 000 graduates throughout its 86-year history, Wits is committed to further developing its infrastructure in line with national priorities to develop high level and scarce skills in the country.

90 Rhodes Scholars have originated from Wits – when only a limited number of these coveted scholarships are awarded to outstanding students worldwide – and Wits exceeds the national norms in terms of enrolments in the Science, Engineering and Technology fields.

University of the Western Cape

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is in Bellville, Cape Town.

Established in 1960 by the South African government as a university for Coloured people only, it has a proud history of creative struggle against oppression, discrimination and disadvantage. UWC is concerned with maintaining a sense of hope for the nation, while helping to build an equitable and dynamic society. With its seven faculties, large number of academic programmes, schools, centres, institutes and units, UWC is committed to playing a central role in South Africa’s knowledge economy.

Walter Sisulu University for Technology and Science

The Walter Sisulu University for Technology and Science (WSU) - an amalgimation of the Border Technikon, Eastern Cape Technikon and the Unversity of the Transkei - is in the Eastern Cape.

Named after the prominent struggle hero, WSU’s vision is to focus on innovative educational, research and community parternship programmes that are responsive to local, regional and national development priorities, and to honour the values of selflessness, courage and compassion that Walter Sisulu epitomised.

WSU has six faculties and over 20 000 students, with campuses in Mthata, Butterworth, Queenstown, Buffalo City and Bhisho.

University of Venda

The University of Venda, or Univen, which stands for the University of Venda for Science and Technology, is in Thohoyandou in Limpopo.

Originally established to serve the Venda bantustan in 1982, it changed its focus in 2002 to emphasise science and technological education, offering both theoretical and practically-orientated courses. As a specialist university, Univen has three faculties and graduated 1600 students in 2007, in fields of study that are responsive to the development needs of the Southern African region.
